The model that made Schwinn popular among home users, the 2012 edition Schwinn 420 elliptical still maintains its fan following.
Affordability is often considered a major issue when you’re about to buy an elliptical trainer from a reputed brand. With the Schwinn 420 Elliptical, this Fitness Giant has made a genuine attempt to provide you with a machine that boasts of the well-researched biomechanical design that’s common to all Schwinn elliptical trainers (you might be familiar with the trio of BioFit Comfort, BioDyne Performance and BioConnect Feedback, if you’ve read a couple of Schwinn Elliptical Reviews!), whilst giving you practical features, at a mid-scale price point.
My teenage daughter wasn’t very thrilled with my purchase decision initially, as she wanted something flashier and hi-tech, but I’m glad I still went ahead. Since all of us at home are pretty tall, this Front Drive Elliptical is aptly designed to suit our frames, be it in terms of the stride length, pedal placement or handlebars alignment. What’s also great is that there are absolutely no complications, as far its assembly or usage is concerned! Frankly, the only thing that left me disappointed was the screen not being backlit, but you can definitely count on Schwinn to make it up to you, with its efficient, impact-free and virtually noiseless workouts!

Size and Design – 8/10
While the Schwinn 420 Elliptical weighs 165 pounds, its dimensions are 62 x 26 x 71 inches and the maximum user weight it can support is 300 pounds. Now one great thing about buying any piece of fitness equipment from Schwinn, is that you’re completely assured of getting home a solid, stable and well-built structure, which is the case with this particular model as well. You’ll find meticulous attention to detail, as far as the size and positioning of the stabilizers and levelers are concerned, to ensure an overall sturdy frame. Though this elliptical trainer is not very compact or portable, it does come with transport wheels, Also note that this is a Front Drive Model (which means that the motor and flywheel are located at the front of the structure), making it a more suitable elliptical trainer for tall users.
Comfort and Ergonomics – 9/10
The Schwinn 420 Elliptical certainly deserves accolades for the degree of comfort provided! Talk of the natural 18” stride length, the bi-directional and articulating foot plates that enable you to easily workout different muscle groups in your lower body, fixed and moving handlebars, the 16 variable resistance levels, or the high-inertia flywheel that ensures ultra-smooth movements, this home elliptical machine accords the maximum importance to impact-free, ergonomic workouts!
Safety – 8/10
The higher the stability of the workout platform, the lesser are your chances of toppling over. In this regard, this elliptical trainer from Schwinn has a fairly safe and stable design. The fact that the Schwinn Elliptical has an ECB Resistance System also ensures that the transition to another resistance level is jerk-free, and the biomechanically-designed linkages have especially been crafted for a safe, yet full-fledged head-to-toe workout!

Advanced Features and Personalization – 7/10
With 6 course profiles, 7 fixed workout programs and 1 customizable one, the Schwinn 420 Elliptical provides you ample flexibility of choosing exactly the kind of workout challenges that you wish to pursue. If you’ve read Schwinn Elliptical Reviews in general, I’m pretty sure you’ve come across one that mention great things about the high levels of personalization and hi-tech features offered. Of course this being a budget trainer from Schwinn’s fine range, it has basic features and add-ons in place, which include modest in-console speakers, an input-port for mp3 players, a magazine rack, water-bottle holder and a small in-built fan. So don’t expect state-of-the-art speakers, sophisticated performance tracking and cutting-edge features; you’ll only find the utility ones here!
Console – 7/10
What’s great about the console of the Schwinn 420 Elliptical, is that you have a huge variety of display readouts- time, interval time, calories, pulse, speed, RPM, course profile, resistance level, watts and distance. So it’s a huge pity that the illumination of the LCD display is so poor, especially when there are other elliptical trainer from Schwinn, like the Schwinn 425, Schwinn 431 and Schwinn 450, which boast of extra-large, backlight displays! Nonetheless, I should also tell you that with many ellipticals, I’ve found the heart rate sensors to be somewhat inaccurate, but in case of this Schwinn elliptical, the integrated grip heart rate system is precision-personified!
Warranty and Maintenance – 8/10
If you consider the entire range of elliptical trainers manufactured by Schwinn, the frame warranty offered varies from 2 years to 15 years, whereas the parts and labor warranty ranges from 6 months to 2 years. Specifically in case of this Schwinn Elliptical, the frame warranty provided is limited to 5 years, whereas it’s 1 year for parts and 90 days for labor-pertaining issues. In fact, when my shipment arrived first and I assembled the model, I found the flywheel to be extremely squeaky. I called up the helpline number mentioned on the manual immediately and summoned the technician, who rectified the issue quite promptly.
Final Verdict – 7.8/10
Having taken a close look at the complete picture, it would suffice to say that the Schwinn 420 Elliptical is a simplistic, modest elliptical trainer that can easily accommodate the varied cardio routines of your family. Should you be seeking a scientifically-designed, sturdily-built and easy-to-assemble-and-use elliptical trainer, this is going to be a worthwhile purchase!
